Three years later, in 2010, he had won the senior ABA Championships, and at that point, he was given the opportunity to turn professional boxing, along with a $50,000 British pound payment. Joshua declined, saying he preferred to compete for medals rather than money, but he did so.

He was selected for the Great Britain Olympic Team for the 2012 London Olympics after winning the 2011 Amateur Boxer of the Year award. Even though Joshua was heavily criticized for several of his matches and some even claimed that the home-field advantage was key to his success, he still managed to win the gold medal in the Olympics.

After becoming professional and receiving a contract from Matchroom Sports, he made his ring debut at the O2 Arena in London in October 2013 against Italian fighter Emanuele Leo, winning via first-round TKO.

One year later, at age 24, Anthony Joshua became a world champion when he secured the WBC International Heavyweight Champion belt, once again at the O2 Arena.

One of Joshua’s biggest fights was when he faced Wladimir Klitschko for the vacant WBA Super Title in a unification match, breaking the box office records, over 90,000 people saw Joshua take the victory in a dramatic fashion after a knockout brought down the fierce Ukrainian.

For that fight in April 2017, Anthony Joshua reportedly earned $17 million dollars.

 

Klitschko retired in 2018 without a rematch ever happening, despite lots of talk about it.

When he was at his peak, Anthony Joshua agreed to fight mostly unknown Mexican fighter Andy Ruiz Jr. and surprisingly lost by TKO, but even then he secured a payday of $25 million dollars.

A rematch was set between the two of them in Saudi Arabia, and despite being the challenger, Anthony Joshua had made sure his winnings weren’t below the whopping $60 million dollar mark.

That made him one of the highest-paid athletes in the world that year.
