On Wednesday, tragedy hit Bayelsa State once more when eight people were thought dead in a boat accident near Oyoma, close to Oporoma, the state capital, and seat of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

According to reports, the accident included two boats, one of which collided with the other as a result of terrible weather and limited sight.

Only five days had passed after a similar tragedy between the Otuan and Ayama axes of the same Southern Ijaw LGA on Saturday cost six lives.

The state Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Workers Union, Ipigansi Ogoniba, who confirmed the latest accident, said it involved a local boat and a speedboat.

“It occurred at Oyoma near Oporoma and eight people died. One of the boats, the local boat, stopped and the other one hit it,” he added.

The spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area confirmed the tragedy.
