In the Abia State local government of Isiala Ngwa, a commercial bus driver was allegedly fatally stabbed by an unnamed member of the Federal Road Safety Corps or FRSC.

On Tuesday, August 16, the incident reportedly took place at the Umuikaa intersection on the Port Harcourt-Aba-Enugu Expressway.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke with Vanguard, the bus driver and two FRSC personnel got into a brawl after a disagreement. One of the FRSCs is accused of stabbing the driver in the back during the commotion.

The FRSC officials took the driver to the Ronald Hospital, Mkpuka, where he was confirmed dead by doctors.

“The FRSC people stopped the bus driver. And the man parked his bus with the inscription, Jesus is the rock, with passengers by the roadside.

There was a disagreement and they started exchanging words and a fight broke out. Nobody actually knew why they were fighting but we saw the bus driver rolling on the ground with blood all over his body. People began to gather and the FRSC people took him to the hospital. The man was stabbed on his back and he actually died before he was taken to the hospital,” the witness narrated.

“The government should dismantle the checkpoint at Umuikaa junction before the FRSC will kill more drivers. The FRSC people have been using small boys who hawk goods to extort money from bus drivers and this has been causing problems. Last time, the same FRSC people caused a security agent to kill a driver at this Umuikaa junction.” the witness added.

Sector Commander, FRSC, Abia State, Mr. Paul Ugwu said that he is yet to get the full details of the incident.

“We are yet to get the full details of the situation from our office at Umuikaa for us to be able to inform you better but we learned that a driver was stabbed at Umuikaa,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, Chief Iyke Anyatonwu, has condemned the dastardly killing of the bus driver.

Anyatonwu in a statement issued by his media aide, Enyinnaya Standhope Nwaigwe, urged the State Sector Commander of the FRSC to immediately investigate the matter and apprehend the perpetrators.

“The Executive Chairman, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area and State ALGON Chairman, Comrade Ike Anyatonwu has condemned in strong terms the alleged stabbing to death of a motorist by some Officers and Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps operating at Umuikaa junction of Isiala Ngwa South LGA, along the Port Harcourt – Aba – Enugu Expressway,” the statement read.

“Comrade Anyatonwu who broke his annual leave to visit Ronald Hospital, Mkpuka where the victim was dumped in the pool of his blood by his alleged killers and was later confirmed dead by the Management of the Hospital wondered why the such dastardly act has become a recurring incident at Umuikaa junction and called on the State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps ton immediately investigate the matter with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book

“The State ALGON Chairman while passing a vote of no confidence on the activities of various Security Agencies operating at Umuikaa junction along the Expressway explained that their unlawful activities have defeated the aim of bringing them to the area.

As they have turned their checkpoints to toll gates to the detriment of the people they are to protect while calling on the youths to remain calm and avoid taking laws into their own hands.

“He further promised that his government will assist in ensuring that those involved in the incident are brought to book describing the alleged killing as one too many.”
