A new tool from Google will help you determine whether or not you want to spend the day outdoors.

Google has released a tool that allows you to check the local air quality on iOS and Android. According to the company, the idea is to make it easier for you to decide whether you should spend time outside or stay inside on a specific day owing to wildfires or odd smog, or avoid a potential holiday spot altogether.

The Air Quality Index (AQI), which is used by governmental organizations to notify the public about the daily local pollution levels, will be indicated by Google’s new air quality tool. The Environmental Protection Agency and PurpleAir, a network of community scientists who gather and disseminate hyper-local air quality data, will be the sources of the information displayed on Google Maps.

How To Check Your Air Quality Using Google Maps (2022)


  1. Open Google Maps on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device.
  2. Select the location where you want to check the air quality.
  3. On the top-right corner, tap on the layers icon (two squares stacked on top of each other).
  4. On the slide-out menu and under Map Details, tap Air Quality.
  5. A colour-coded AQI score will appear for each location on the map. Tap on a location to see the full air quality data. The lower the score, the better the level of pollution. Anything under 50 is good while anything above 300 is considered to be hazardous.
