INEC Budgets N239bn On Poll Materials In 2023 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission plans to spend at least N239.2 billion on voting materials and vehicles for the general election in 2023.

This is according to INEC’s 2023 General Election Project Plan, which was unveiled on Thursday, April 21 in Abuja.

The Commission claimed that N239.2 billion, or 78.44% of its N305 billion budget, will be spent on ten important items, including ballot papers, operational vehicles, ballot boxes, ad hoc worker allowances, the printing of result sheets, logistics, and accreditation device purchase.

The N27.1 billion put aside by the commission for prospective run-off elections, including the presidential election, is also included in the N239.2 billion budget.

According to the document’s analysis, the most expensive single component will be the procurement of accrediting devices, which will cost N105.2 billion. This also accounts for 34.51 per cent of the N305 billion election expenditure.

The allotment for ad hoc workers, estimated to number over one million individuals, is N23.7 billion, while N23 billion has been set aside for election logistics, which comprise the movement, deployment, and retrieval of men and equipment for the elections.

INEC will also spend N20.6 billion on ballot paper production and N12.7 billion on non-sensitive materials procurement.

The commission set aside N9.5 billion for result sheets printing, N7.8 billion for ballot boxes purchase, and a supplementary N5.39 billion for the same reason. The election commission will also spend N3.9 billion on operating vehicles.

In a diagram illustrating a comparative analysis of the 2019 and 2023 general election budgets, INEC noted that while N189bn was set aside for the previous elections, the 2023 general election would gulp N305bn.
