Through its Safeguarding, the Rights of a Child initiative, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency have started including elementary and secondary school students in the fight against domestic and sexual violence.

According to a release on Thursday, during a workshop held at Education District I, Agege, the Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, revealed this.

Vivour-Adeniyi added that the STRAC program will encourage youngsters to speak up and report incidences of abuse during the session, which was attended by 750 students from various secondary schools throughout the state.

She said, “STRAC is an interactive workshop to engage children in age-appropriate language on their rights, responsibilities, body safety, sexual abuse, self-defense tips, preservation of evidence in case of physical or sexual abuse and, ultimately, encouraging them to speak out and report abusers.

“The prevention workshop, which was facilitated by trained peer educators with vast experience in gender relations, socialization, dating violence, and sexual violence prevention, will go a long way in curbing incidents of child abuse in the state.

“The goal is to empower millions of children to ensure that they are able to prevent the occurrence of domestic and sexual abuse in Lagos State.”

Vivour-Adeniyi explained that the agency would also provide books and other programs geared to enlighten students on their rights and responsibilities.

She added, “Asides from verbally engaging students on their rights and responsibilities, there are STRAC textbooks prepared by the DSVA.”
