Check For the availability of your proposed business name

Deciding on a name for your business is definitely number one on this list. Choosing a business name can be quite tasking sometimes.

The process involves choosing a suitable name for your business. You must pick a name that is relevant to your business.

  • At this stage, you have the opportunity to search for existing entities to be sure your preferred business name is not chosen or in existence already.
  • You will be required to create an account when you want to reserve a name. Click on sign up and complete the forms displayed
  • You will apply to the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and suggest two alternate names for your business.
  • The CAC will search its database to ensure that the name is not already in use or there is no similar name already in use.
  • The names could be rejected if: it already exists, is confusing, or includes prohibited words such as National, Federal, Government, or Holdings.
  • If the CAC approves the name, then it will reserve the name for you for a 60-day period. During this period it is expected that you will complete the registration process for your business name.

In the past, business name reservations at the CAC took days before they came back with a result. Today, it only takes the same day if you submit your request before 5 pm and it costs just NGN500.

You don’t have to visit the Commission’s office to follow up on the status of your application; you can check the status of your application on the portal.
