    The Normans

    (1066 – 1154)

    The Normans were descendants of Vikings who had settled by force in North East France around the mouth of the Seine River. The land they occupied became known as Normandy. (The name Normandy comes from the French normand, meaning Norsemen and Normans)

    • King William I, the Conqueror 1066 – 1087  (Age 59)
    • King William II, Rufus 1087 – 1100  (Age 43-44)
    • King Henry I 1100 – 1135   (Age 66-67)

    Plantagenets

    (1154 – 1399)

    The name Plategenet reached England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name Plategenet is for a gardener as the name was originally derived from the Old English word plant meaning plant, or young tree.

    The House of Lancaster

    (1399 – 1461)

    House of Lancaster, a cadet branch of the house of Plantagenet. In the 15th century it provided three kings of England—Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI—and, defeated by the house of York, passed on its claims to the Tudor dynasty.

    • Henry IV 1399 – 1413  (Age 45)
    • Henry V 1413 – 1422  (Age 35)
    • Henry VI 1422 – 1461, 1470 – 1471  (Age 45)

    The House of York

    (1461 – 1485)

    House of York, younger branch of the house of Plantagenet of Enland. In the 15th century, having overthrown the house of Lanaster, it provided three kings of England—Edward IV, Edward V, and Richard III—and, in turn defeated, passed on its claims to the Tudor dynasty.

    • King Edward IV 1461 -1470, 1471 – 1483  (Age 48-53)
    • King Edward V 1483 – 1483  (Age 12)
    • King Richard III 1483 – 1485  (Age 32)

    The Tudors

    (1485 -1603)

    The Tudors were Welsh. They brought peace to England after 150 years of virtually continuous warfare, encouraged new religious ideas, overseas exploration and colonisation.

    • King Henry VIII 1509 – 1547  (Age 55)
    • King Edward VI 1547 – 1553  (Age 15)
    • Jane Grey 1554  (Age 16-17)

    The Stuarts

    (1603 – 1649) (1660 – 1714)

    Scotland provided England with a new line of kings, the Stuarts. They were to bring disaster to the nation for, coming from Scotland where royal power had not been curbed by Parliament, they had no understanding of the more democratic ways that had developed in England.

    • James I 1603 – 1625  (Age 58)
    • Charles I 1625 – 1649  (Age 48)
    • Charles II 1660 – 1685  (Age 54)
    • James II 1685 – 1688  (Age 67)
    • William III 1688 – 1702 and Queen Mary II 1688 – 1694  (Age 51, 32)
    • Queen Anne 1702 – 1714  (Age 49)

    The House of Hanoverians

    (1714 -1901)

    Queen Anne, despite so many births, died without leaving an heir, a new family of monarchs now took over the throne -The Hanoverians, from north Germany.  By the Act of Succession of 1701, on the death of Queen Anne the throne passed to her nearest Prostestant relative. This proved to be George, Elector of Hanover, the great-grandson of James I.

    • King George I 1714 – 1727  (Age 67)
    • King George II 1727 – 1760  (Age 76)
    • King George III 1760 – 1820  (Age 81)
    • King George IV 1820 – 1830  (Age 67)
    • King William IV 1830 – 1837  (Age 71)
    • Queen Victoria 1837 – 1901  (Age 81)

    Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and The Winsors

    (1901 -1910) (1910 – Today)

    The name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha came to the British Royal Family in 1840 with the marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, son of Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Queen Victoria herself remained a member of the House of Hanover.

    When George V came to the throne, he changed the family name to Windsor because of the anti-German feeling at the time.

    Interesting Fact: The only time when there was no King or Queen in Britain was when the country was a republic between 1649 and 1660. (In 1649 King Charles I was executed and Britain became a Republic for eleven years. The monarchy was restored in 1660.)
